Rhodes is an island in the Aegean Sea of Greece. The island is only about 20 km off the Turkish coast. About 125‚000 inhabitants live on Rhodes‚ half of them in the capital of the same name.
The old town with its palace and mighty city walls has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Rhodes city‚ the architecture of different epochs from Greek antiquity to the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period flow harmoniously together.
The island is washed by the Aegean Sea from the west and the waters of the Mediterranean Sea from the east and is also called Emerald‚ as around 40% of the total area is covered by pine and cypress trees.
